This year’s theme for the annual Inequality Special Focus Day (SFD) was Intersectional Feminism. Unique features of this SFD included the Intersectional Feminism Booklet, a laundry rack exhibition, Critical Engagement identity workshops, and a closing performance of “Fucking Feminists.” To help the community better navigate SFD topics, the Intersectional Feminism Booklet featured 46 pages of testimonials, poems, and artwork from UWC RBC students & staff as well as external UWC students. The laundry rack, inspired by Mexican artist and feminist activist Mónica Mayer’s “Tendederos” exhibitions, was an interactive piece acting as a safe space for injustice that held reflections and statements by community members. External guests from the Critical Engagement team (part of UWCx) hosted identity workshops to help empower students and support the exchange of knowledge and experiences in a challenging, yet safe way. In addition to testimonials, songs, and guest speakers, a highlight from the closing ceremony was a student and staff performance of the short play “Fucking Feminists,” investigating what feminism means, and what it has become. Thanks to the effort from the students and staff on the IF SFD team, the day was a memorable, eye-opening experience that shed light on issues impacting both the RBC and global scale.
